Philippe FABRY
Philippe Fabry, born in 1952, left France, his birth place, at a very young age to travel around the world. He first discovered Africa, doing in turn a motorcycle crossing of the Sahara desert, a boat expedition on the Ogoué river and the management of a timber company in the forests of Cameroon. But it is in Asia that he spent these last twenty five years. Starting in Sri Lanka where he worked in an elephant training centre, he travelled on to India, Indonesia, Malaysia, did a trip around the world through Australia, the Pacific Islands and the United States to come back to the sub-continent, carrying his ruck-sack on the trekking paths of Nepal and then criss-crossing Rajasthan on camel back.
He discovered Pakistan when he volunteered to be Chef de Mission of a humanitarian organisation carrying out a major aid program for Afghan refugees. He was bewitched by the country where he wandered for many years.
Here, he collaborated in the shooting of a documentary film on the Indus and took most of the photographs for a book which supplemented the film and was published in 1990 Les derniers Seigneurs de l'Indus. A work which meant thousands of kilometres on the track, deserts and water courses of Pakistan, Central Asia and Tibet.
Later, in 1991, Philippe FABRY authored a photographic book titled : "Balouchistan, le désert insoumis" published in French.
He spent many years living and sailing with his family aboard his own sailing yacht le Dragon de Maud. They visited the Mediterranean Sea, the Red Sea, the Indian Ocean and the China Sea.
In 1995 he published another photographic book Wandering with the Indus.
For the past ten years, Philippe has been concentrating on taking photos and lives with his family in Sri Lanka where he incorporated the publishing house Viator Publications. He is also a consultant for the Photo Archives Department, Central Cultural Fund.
In the days following the terrible Tsunami which devasteted the coasts of Sri Lanka, Philippe Fabry incorporated an NGO, Sri Lanka Solidarity, to help the victims and the reconstruction of the country.
