The tradition of Dutch mapmaking in Ceylon began in 1602 and continued throughout the period of their occupation of the island. In the preparation of this book, the authors were given access to rare collections of maps and plans in institutions in The Netherlands, England and Sri Lanka and now share it with readers of this comprehensive collection of Dutch cartography. The Introduction traces the evolution of the shape and size of the 2nd century Ptolemaic map of Taprobana to that of present day Sri Lanka. Over thirty general maps of the entire island - the better-known printed maps and many manuscript maps - provide an excellent coverage of the section on Atlas and Geographical maps. Several sectional maps and plans of towns, not previously published have been included, giving an insight into the meticulous care exercised in Dutch mapmaking. This book is to be savoured for its colourful collection and the scholarly commentaries that accompany the maps. |
